Surgical Approaches to Cleft Palate Defects in Small Animals

Palatal defects in small animal patients can be frustrating and challenging clinical cases. Surgical approaches to both congenital and acquired palatal defects will be discussed during the webinar. Staged surgical repairs, including tooth extraction techniques will be considered as we address surgical planning. Perspectives from both surgeons and dentists will be provided in order to provide a comprehensive approach to these cases.
CE Credit
RACE Program #20-905408 is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credits in jurisdictions which recognize the American Association of Veterinary State Boards’ (AAVSB) Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE). However, participants should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions on certain methods of delivery of continuing education.

Kendall Taney, DVM

Kendall Taney is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College and a Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry. She is a partner at the Center for Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She attended Virginia Tech and completed general and surgical internships prior to her dentistry residency. Her special interests include maxillofacial reconstruction and she is a candidate in the AVDC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship Program.

Dr. Thieman is a soft tissue surgeon at Texas A&M University. She attended the University of Missouri for veterinary school, the University of Tennessee for a rotating internship, and the University of Florida for residency. She has interests in surgical site infections, respiratory diseases, wounds, and all aspects of soft tissue surgery.
Karen Tobias, DVM, MS, DACVS

An ACVS board-certified surgeon, Dr. Karen Tobias is a professor at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She received her DVM from the University of Illinois and completed an internship at Purdue University and surgery residency and master's degree at The Ohio State University. Dr. Tobias has published over 170 scientific articles and book chapters. She is the author of the Manual of Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery (Wiley/Blackwell, 2010; 2017); co-editor of Veterinary Surgery: Small Animal (Elsevier/Saunders, 2012; 2017); and co-author of Atlas of Ear Diseases of the Dog and Cat (Wiley/Blackwell, 2013). In 2020, she was named Institute Professor of University of Tennessee’s Institute of Agriculture. She lives in Knoxville, Tennessee with two troublesome dogs and a crochety cat.
