Small Animal Morbidity and Mortality Rounds: Challenging Hepatobiliary Cases

This case presentation will detail the case workup, surgical procedure, and complications associated with a hepatobiliary surgery gone awry. Learning points and strategies to manage the complications will be discussed.

Nick Bacon, VetMB, MRCVS, DACVS (Small Animal)

Dr. Bacon qualified from Cambridge Vet School in 1997 and after two years in general practice returned to Cambridge as the Petsaver’s resident in soft tissue surgery and oncology. He then spent two years in soft tissue referral practice in the UK. In 2005 he started a 12-month Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the Animal Cancer Centre at Colorado State University and then joined the faculty at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, working in the oncology department as one of three surgical oncologists, becoming Head of Oncology in 2011. Dr. Bacon is an ACVS Founding Fellow in Surgical Oncology and was previously the president of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology. He is a Diplomate of the European and American College of Veterinary Surgeons and is the only surgeon working in the UK to have completed a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology. In line with this, he is the only vet working in the UK to be awarded specialist status in Small Animal Surgery (Oncology) by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Associate Professor Soft Tissue & Oncologic Surgery

Dr. Oblak is a veterinary surgery oncologist, associate professor of soft tissue and oncologic surgery, and the animal health research chair in veterinary medical innovation in the Department of Clinical Studies at Ontario Veterinary College. She is an active member and chair of the research committee of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology and the co-director of the Institute for Comparative Cancer Investigation at the University of Guelph.

As a clinician-scientist focused on veterinary clinical trials, her research program centers on innovation and the incorporation of novel techniques and technology with translational potential. Her notable research interests include the incorporation of 3D printing into surgical planning for animals and humans and near-infrared fluorescence-guided surgery for sentinel lymph node mapping and intraoperative decision making.

Valery F. Scharf, DVM, MS, DACVS (Small Animal)

Assistant Professor of Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery

North Carolina State University

Dr. Scharf is an assistant professor of small animal soft tissue and oncologic surgery at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She received a bachelor of science in earth systems from Stanford University and a DVM from Texas A&M University prior to completing a rotating internship at The Ohio State University and a surgery residency and master of science at the University of Florida. Her research interests include minimally invasive surgery, surgical oncology, and endocrine neoplasia, as well as the role of companion animals as models of environmental exposure.

Kelley Thieman, MS, DVM, DACVS (Small Animal) (Moderator)

Dr. Thieman is a soft tissue surgeon at Texas A&M University. She attended the University of Missouri for veterinary school, the University of Tennessee for a rotating internship, and the University of Florida for residency. She has interests in surgical site infections, respiratory diseases, wounds, and all aspects of soft tissue surgery.
