Collaboration between anesthesiologists and surgeons in the management of critical cases has the potential to alleviate pain, decrease morbidity and improve survival. This webinar presents current standards for managing these cases as well as new methods recently developed or under investigation. Diseases presented will include laminitis and colic and there will be a discussion on prevention of morbidity and mortality during general anesthesia recover of horses.

Klaus Hopster, DVM, PhD, Dipl ECVAA
Klaus Hopster is Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania and he is a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anesthesia & Analgesia.
He received his DVM degree from the School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany, in 2006 and conducted a large animal internship at the equine clinic of the School of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover. During this time, he completed a thesis focusing on “Open-Lung-Concept-ventilation during general anesthesia of the horse and influence on the early post-operative period”. Thereafter he completed a residency in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia as well as his habilitation thesis (PhD) investigating the influence of general anesthesia on intestinal perfusion and oxygenation.
Klaus’ research activities in the field of anesthesiology over the past 10 years have focused on intraoperative lung function and tissue oxygenation in horses. He further is interested in intra- and postoperative pain assessment and management in large animals.

Louise Southwood, BVSc, PhD, DACVS, DACVECC

Dr. Southwood graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 and completed a locum at Hagley Equine Hospital in Hagley, Tasmania. After completion of a large animal internship at Washington State University (1994–1995), she pursued a large animal surgery residency at Colorado State University (1995–1998) followed by a PhD in fracture healing (1999–2002). She became board certified in large animal surgery in 2000 and large animal emergency and critical care in 2005. She is currently a clinical educator associate professor of large animal emergency and critical care at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania. Her clinical and research interests are in equine emergency and critical care, particularly colic and gastrointestinal surgery. She has recently edited two textbooks: Practical Guide to Equine Colic (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013) and Equine Emergency and Critical Care (Manson Publishing, 2014). She and her husband, Eric Parente, have three children who keep them very busy!
