Equine Distal Interphalangeal Joint Arthrodesis
Participants perform an open dorsal approach to the distal interphalangeal joint, debride the articular cartilage, and prepare the dorsal surface of the middle phalanx and the dorsal proximal surface of the distal phalanx for application of a custom arthrodesis plate. Under radiographic guidance the plate is applied along with transarticular screws in lag fashion. The custom designed plate is applied through a single skin incision without penetration of the hoof wall.
Learning Objectives:
- Following completion of the laboratory the participants should be able to outline the indications, options and expected outcomes for arthrodesis of the equine distal interphalangeal joint
- Following the laboratory participants should be able to perform the dorsal approach to the distal interphalangeal joint, remove the articular cartilage, prepare the joint for application of the implants and apply a plate and trans articular screws for arthrodesis.
