Challenging Farm Animal Surgical Procedures

This presentation will review the frequent causes of deep digital sepsis in cattle. Treatment will involve both claw-preserving treatments and amputation, emphasizing current surgical breakthroughs. Additionally, postoperative problems and management are discussed. This presentation describes common and complex calf umbilical problems. Anatomy, pathophysiology, and medicinal therapy will be covered, but the surgical techniques will be emphasized. Include treatments, procedures, and outcomes. Finally, this presentation will discuss case selection, implant selection, owner expectations, financing, and aftercare, focusing on case selection. Also discussed are the moral and ethical concerns of metal implants in food-producing animals.

RACE Program #20-918279 is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credits in jurisdictions which recognize the American Association of Veterinary State Boards’ (AAVSB) Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE). Joe Lozier received his DVM from The Ohio State University in 2014. He went on to complete an internship and residency in farm animal medicine and surgery at OSU. He received a master of science degree in comparative and veterinary medicine along with the completion of his residency in 2018. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Large Animal) and is an assistant professor of farm animal medicine and surgery at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Paul Merkatoris, DVM, DACVS (Large Animal)

Dr. Merkatoris is an assistant teaching professor of large animal surgery at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science and DVM from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He completed a large animal surgery residency at Iowa State University, Collgege of Veterinary Medicine in 2020 and was subsequently faculty there for one year. He joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine in 2021.

Pierre-Yves Mulon, DVM, PhD, DACVS (Large Animal) (Moderator)

Dr. Mulon is an assistant professor in farm animal medicine and surgery in the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Tennessee. Dr. Mulon obtained his veterinary degree from the Ecole Nationale Veterinaire d'Alfort in France and completed his internship and residency program at the Universite de Montreal in Canada. He held a clinical instructor position at the University of Montreal and an assistant faculty position at Texas A&M after his residency program. Dr. Mulon also worked in private practice for six years, Since 2016, Dr. Mulon joined the University of Tennessee. His areas of interest are farm animal surgeries, both soft tissue and orthopedics.
